Guests describe Sun N Sand Resort as a quiet, dog-friendly, vintage-chic property with beautiful grounds and pools. However, the accommodation is plagued by hygiene issues, dilapidated amenities, and inconsistent housekeeping. While the location and vintage charm are loved by some, the property requires significant maintenance.
Very peaceful and quiet. Beautiful grounds. It could use a little TLC, and though the rooms were small, they utilized every square foot effectively. Dogs allowed with a fee.
I just want to set expectations for future guests. We reserved three nights but stayed only two. - Room was very small, dirty (floor was filthy, bathroom smelled of urine, ice bucket had not been emptied) and buggy! Live and dead bugs were visible and active. Did not see roaches, but a beetle was crawling across the blanket when I woke up in the morning. - The bed was a full/standard size and the bedding and mattress were decades old. It was the most uncomfortable bed I have ever tried to sleep on. - The door to the room would not lock and hubby had to visit the office. Someone came to the room and tried this and that with the door code. It didn't work so they gave us a key. - The TV would not work and hubby again had to go to the office to get someone to come to our room and reset it. - There are no phones in the room hence the reason hubby went to office. By the way, ice is handed out in the office, so get some before they close. - The cancelation policy is not standard for the industry. We wanted to cut our trip short and they would not refund any money. - Geese did their business all over the sidewalks but while we were there no one sprayed it off. I can only imagine how much of that doodoo was being tracked into the rooms. Saw three young boys riding scooters on the sidewalk through all the yuck. + The pool was the only saving grace, although glad we brought our own towels. We chose this location for the outside pool as we were visiting in July. + The location is close to South Haven and beach, but you will drive wherever you go. +/- The price is lower than most nearby but you get what you pay for. See photos. - There is no food on location unless there was a vending machine somewhere with snacks. I saw only a soda vending machine near our room. We spoke with another couple at the pool. They had the same issues with the room being small, the bed being uncomfortable, as well as the TV not working. They said they chose it for the pool but would not return. We will not return.
Perfect hotel for me, my partner, and dog! Other hotels and airbnbs in the area were extra expensive and/or not pet-friendly due to LDW, and we didn’t want to spend $1,000+ for just a 3-night stay. If you’re looking for a hotel that’s affordable, perfectly located, has a lot of outdoor activities, very dog friendly, and a midwest/vintage charm, Sun & Sand is a great choice. While the rooms are a bit outdated, they were clean and well-kept. The bathroom was especially clean. Some of these reviews scared us, so we brought our own bedding just in case the rooms were as bad as some people said. They were not bad at all. The hotel bedding was also fine — clean and fresh. The room was also not “super small.” It was the perfect size for the three of us, one suitcase, duffle bag, and 2 totes. The only con was that the plumbing in the shower was a bit clogged so the water took a very long time to drain. The mattress was also a bit too soft for our liking, but we slept well. We also enjoyed how family friendly the hotel was. Lots of people outside grilling, laying by the pool, playing corn hole or just relaxing. Great vibes overall!
Super cute motel! We’ll be back again for sure. Wish we would have had more time to explore South Haven and enjoy the pool! Our room was very clean and had lots of windows. Our room was in the beach house. There was a beautiful pond behind the motel with a waterfall. The pool looked amazing. Super clean just like the rest of the grounds. I could tell that the owners take great pride in their property. Our bed was a little soft but the bunk beds were brand new. Worked out perfect since we were traveling with our teenage daughter and dog.
Great location and cute, inexpensive rooms, very cool forest trail on the property. I liked the rooms and found them comfortable and well sized. If the housekeeping was standard, this place would have five stars from me. There's a lot of potential to make this hotel great with better staffing. Additionally, it would be a big improvement if they had a night stand on each side of the bed instead of only one, including having a lamp on each side, this should be a standard feature in any hotel. Additionally, a big improvement would be having soap/shampoo/conditioner/lotion dispensers in the showers like most newer hotels have instead of the travel sized tubes, especially since this place does not replace the products during your stay. The biggest issue is that it's very difficult to get housekeeping to clean your room. You cannot use the "make up my room" sign on your door, you have to go ask the front desk, which was not clear when we signed in. Once we realized this was the case and requested room service, they only made our bed and did not take out the trash or give us clean towels or new soap/shampoo. The second time they didn't do anything but toss a plastic bag of new towels on our unmade bed. They didn't even take the dirty towels away. Very weird. Since a lot of sand gets dragged into the room from going to the beach, having housekeeping every day is pretty important and was definitely something I expected. Overall, I would stay here again because location and price is more important to me but the housekeeping is virtually non existent if that matters to you.
